Social networkers named

Are you a Netrepreneur, Transumer, or Essentialist?

Researchers have identified personality types of social net- worker users, ranging from the business minded to uber creative. The study by UK firm The Future Laboratory on behalf of MySpace found six key types of social user.

  • The Netrepreneurs – people who use social networking sites for the sole purpose of generating income;
  • Connectors – those that revel in passing on links;
  • Transumers – the grazers of content and networks rather than creators. They follow the lead of others and join groups connected to things they like doing;
  • Collaborators – those that believe in people power and use social networking to create events, ideas and activities with others;
  • Scene breakers – early adopters who use social networking sites to discover and be part of new and emerging scenes, and finally
  • Essentialists – the vast majority of users who use social networking to stay in touch with friends and family.

The UK research also found that nearly half of 18 to 24 year-old social networkers said that if they had 15 minutes of spare time, they would spend it on social networking sites rather than watch TV, reading or talking on their mobile, with a quarter of respondents saying social networks had reduced the amount of time they spent watching TV.

In addition, nearly a quarter of the 2500 questioned said brands had to work harder for their respect, with more than one in ten saying social sites had made them expect more from brands and content online.

Social Networking

February 7th, 2008

Social networks connect people at low cost; this can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand their contact base.

These networks often act as a customer relationship management tool for companies selling products and services.

Companies can also use social networks for advertising in the form of banners and text ads.

Since businesses operate globally, social networks can make it easier to keep in touch with contacts around the world.

The following video provides a quick overview of how it all works.

Social Bookmarking

February 7th, 2008

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains.

The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.

Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags.

They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them.

Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.

Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags.

This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users.

As these services have matured and grown more popular, they have added extra features such as ratings and comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing of bookmarks, web annotation, and groups or other social network features.

The following video clearly demonstrates how the system works.

Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. These wiki websites are often also referred to as wikis; for example, Wikipedia is often considered one of the best known wikis.

Wikis are being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for Knowledge Management.
